Trek Distance and Duration

To reach Everest Base Camp, you must cover at least 130km. This distance is quite long based on the normal route, but the difficulty compounds when you consider the tough terrain, high altitude, and harsh weather conditions. 

Furthermore, the EBC expedition takes about 10-14 days if you are looking for a short or complete trek. However, adding a few more excursions to your itinerary, like the Lobuche Trek, can extend it up to 16 days. 

You must walk at least 7-8 hours daily to cover this distance in the given duration. Furthermore, the trail is upward ascent with steep hills, rocky boulders, and snowtimes snow-capped hills. However, if you are physically fit and mentally prepared to go to Everest Base Camp, this difficulty will not affect you much.

Altitude Sickness

The high altitude can create difficulty, especially for beginners during their trek. During this trek, you will ascend to an elevation of 5,644 meters. It’s important to know that altitude sickness can occur after reaching 3,000 meters. This trek takes you over 3,000 meters for several days, which increases the chance of sickness. It’s important to take necessary precautions and prepare properly before embarking on this trek in the Himalayas.

Altitude sickness is one of its types. One is Acute Mountain Sickness, in which the patient shows symptoms like headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and shortness of breath. There are two more serious types of this illness

They are HACE and HAPE. In HACE, it affects the brain portion of the patient, whereas in HAPE, the affected portion is the respiratory area. Among all the bad weather, rainy weather during monsoon season is the worst to trek. The trails are not appropriate for trekking as they get wet and slippery. The chances of floods at lower altitudes and landslides can also affect your trek.

Physical and Mental Exercise

As mentioned earlier, trekking these trails for several days and trekking seven to eight hours every day will take a toll on your body. During your trek, you’ll have to pass through various terrains, suspension bridges, pine and rhododendron forests, and snow-capped mountains. Hence, even before heading out on a trek, you can prepare for your trek by being physically ready. Go out on a day-to-day walk or hike at a higher altitude carrying a backpack.

The trek becomes easy and effective if your packing list contains all the necessary items. Since EBC is a high-altitude trek, woolen clothes are essential. However, you must also take easy-to-wear clothes and shoes to trek in tough terrains. Furthermore, you must also carry toiletries and medicinal items. Small items like sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm, and first aid items can prove valuable during your trek.

While packing, you must check all the documents you need to carry. Passports, photos, visas, and travel insurance are extremely essential for your trek and for entering the region.

Acclimatize Properly

Acclimatizing properly is important while trekking at high altitudes, especially for beginners. Every trekking agency and experienced guide will include an acclimatization day in your itinerary. Acclimatizing is very important whether you’re a seasoned trekker or a beginner.

In higher altitudes, acclimatizing can prove to be vital for your health and trekking experience as a whole. It is also a major way to prevent altitude sickness. There are a few ways to acclimatize, and they are taking complete rest or hiking in higher areas but coming to lower altitudes to sleep.

Drink plenty of water early in the morning after you wake up. You might want to drink hot drinks like tea or coffee mixed with ginger, lemon, or honey during breakfast. The combination of hot tea with honey or ginger makes your body warm and keeps you safe from dehydration.

Book in Advance

Hence, if you are a beginner, it is even wiser to book in advance. Advance booking during your trek will help you get the most favorable hotel rooms and food services.

Hire Guide and Porter
