The Everest Base Camp and Island Peak lie in the Khumbu region of Nepal. It is an awe-inspiring trek where you can witness the remote landscapes, valleys, and gorges. Similarly, you can view some of the world’s tallest mountains other than Mt. Everest like Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Ama Dablam, and many more.
The trail to Everest Base Camp with the Island Peak Climbing goes through the Sagarmatha National Park. Hence, you can witness the unique Himalayan biodiversity. It is also home to endangered species like red panda, Himalayan Tahr, snow leopard, and more. The trail goes through the Khumbu glacier, waterfalls, glacial streams, and moraines.

Everest Base Camp with Island Peak Climbing Itinerary
Collapse AllYou will begin your journey with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. You will board a domestic flight from the domestic terminal at Tribhuvan International Airport. After around 30 to 40 minutes of flight, you will land at Tenzing Hillary Airport, Lukla.
From here onwards you will start your trek to Phakding (2610 meters). The trail is relatively easy. It passes through the Chaurikharka village and descends to the Dudh Koshi River. It will be a short trek of around 3 hours. You will rest for the day at Phakding.
The trail leaving Phakding follows the Dudh Koshi River. You will come across several suspension bridges including the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge. Then you will arrive at the Sagarmatha National Park entrance. You can pass the entrance once you show your permit.
The trail goes right through the national park and descends through the forests of rhododendrons and oaks. Similarly, the majestic Mt. Everest will slowly come into view as you get closer to Namche Bazaar (3440 meters). The whole trek takes around 6 to 7 hours.
For day three, you will acclimatize at Namche Bazaar. It is a picturesque Sherpa settlement. There are many luxurious accommodations, restaurants, cafes, ATMs, and banks here. Similarly, the village serves as an important acclimatization stop for the Everest Base Camp with the Island Peak Climbing.
It is important to stay active despite it being a rest day. This helps your body to adapt to the changing elevation and surroundings. You can explore around the village and go for a short hike. There is the Sagarmatha National Park Visitor Center, Hillary School, and many age-old monasteries around the village.
After taking an acclimatization day at Namche Bazaar, you will head towards the next destination, Tengboche (3880 meters). The trek takes around 5 hours. The trail can get quite steep as you pass by dense alpine forests. The magnificent mountain views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Island Peak will keep you company during the trek.
Similarly, you can also get an opportunity to witness a variety of flora and fauna along the way. Then, you will come to a small village, Phunki Tenga before reaching Tengboche. Tengboche village is home to one of the biggest and oldest Buddhist monasteries, Tengboche Monastery. The monastery has historical and cultural significance. You will rest for the day at Tengboche.
The trail will gradually ascend as you leave Tengboche. It is an uphill trek up to Pangboche. Similarly, you will pass by prayer flags, chortens, mani walls, and several small villages. The trail follows the Lobuche River and enters the Imja Valley. Then onwards, the trail starts to ascend steeply towards Dingboche (4410 meters).
Dingboche is a village that is surrounded by stone walls. The mountain view looks stunning from the village. It’s a 5 to 6-hour trek from Tengboche to reach Dingboche.
You will take another acclimatization day at Dingboche. You will take a hike to Nangkartshang Peak. The peak is situated at an elevation of 5083 meters. It separates the Imja valley from Dingboche. Similarly, you can see clear mountain views from on top of the mountain. After the hike, you will return to Dingboche.
Your destination for the day is Lobuche (4910 meters). The trail begins with a gentle hike to Thukla. After Thukla, the trail will become steeper as you climb to the Dughla pass. You will pass by a memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives during the Everest expedition. The path is rocky and the landscapes are barren.
As you continue climbing higher, you will come across the Khumbu Glacier. Along with the mountain views, you can also get a glimpse of Kalapathar. After crossing the glacial moraine, you will reach Lobuche. It takes around 6 hours to reach the Lobuche from Dingboche.
This day’s trek is going to be long and difficult but rewarding. You will follow the Khumbu Glacial moraine. There are many big boulders along the trail. Similarly, the trail also gets slippery in some sections. You will reach Gorakhshep (5165 meters). After resting for a while, you will continue your trek to Everest Base Camp (5364 meters).
As you get closer to the Everest Base Camp, you may stumble upon numerous tents. These tents are set by expedition teams. You will explore the base camp and witness Mt. Everest and surrounding peaks from up close. Then, you will head back to Gorakshep.
You will hike early morning to Kalapathar View Point (5545 meters) today. The path to Kalapathar is rough and difficult. But you can get a 360-degree view of Mt. Everest from here. Similarly, you can also witness the majestic views of other surrounding peaks. After spending some time at Kalapathar, you will head back to Gorakshep.
From Gorakshep, you will retrace your steps back to Dingboche. It’s a long trek and takes around 8 hours to reach the village. Your Everest Base Camp trek will end here. You will sleep overnight at Dingboche.
On this day, you will head towards Chhukung (4760 meters). Again, the trek will get steep as you leave Dingboche. You will pass by several settlements before reaching Chukkung. It is a short take of around 3 hours. The Chhukung village is a charming settlement with a scenic view of Imja Khola. Similarly, you can also enjoy the mountain views.
Your hike to the Island Peak Base Camp (5100 meters) begins from here. First, you have to climb an uphill trail towards the south. Then, you will head towards the east main valley. The trail passes by several waterfalls, glacial streams, and glacial moraine.
Once you reach the base camp, you can witness the southwestern side of the Island Peak (6189 meters). You will camp at the base camp for the night.
The day begins early morning as you head towards the Island Peak summit. The reason for starting early is to reach the summit before noon. You want to avoid the afternoon wind while climbing the peak. Sitting at an elevation of 6189 meters, Island Peak is also known as Imja Tse. The trail ascends the rocky ridge.
You will have to climb the glacier to the southern ridge. Then, you have to follow the ridge. After 2 to 3 hours of climbing, you will finally reach the Island Peak summit. The scenery and mountain view are breathtaking. You can get panoramic mountain views from the top. Then, you will descend back the trail.
Your Island Peak Trek ends there and you will head towards Chhukung. You will stay overnight at Chhukung.
It is time to say head back to the path we came from. On this day, you will trek from Chhukung to Pangboche (39000 meters). The trail mostly includes descending. The whole trek takes around 4 to 5 hours.
You will leave Pangboche and once again head towards Namche Bazaar. The trail will again pass by several settlements before reaching the village. The trek duration takes around 4 to 5 hours.
You will retrace your path back to Lukla (2860 meters) from Namche Bazaar. The trail once again passes through the forests and national park. The trek duration is around 6 hours. You will spend the night at Namche Bazaar.
You will take a flight back to Kathmandu. You can get a glimpse of the mountains one last time from the flight. Your journey will end when you reach Kathmandu.

As a result, trekkers may experience altitude sickness symptoms. The weather can also change rapidly as you move to the higher elevations.
