Gosaikunda Trek Overview

The 5 Days Gosaikunda Trek is for anyone who wants to enjoy adventure but doesn’t have much time to dedicate to it. Normally trekking in Nepal can take from 10 days to 20 days based on the destination you choose and the itinerary you create. But if you can only spare 4 to 5 days but still want to experience some amazing adventure and get to see some stunning views then this is the trek to look for.

Gosaikunda is a sacred religious oligotrophic lake in Nepal. It lies in the Langtang National Park in the Rasuwa District, elevating at 4,380 m. The lake is part of the Gosaikunda complex spreading across 2500 acres. Due to the religious beliefs of both Hindus and Buddhists, the lake has been designated a Ramsar site for fifteen years.

Gosaikunda Lake remains crowded throughout the year but most pilgrims of Hindu and Buddhist religion flock in the region during August. The festival of Janai Purnima is celebrated by several hundred thousand crowds either local or from neighboring countries.

The five days Gosaikunda Trek begins from Dhunce via drive or bus. You will then start scaling hills from Dhunche along the way and reach the small village Chandanbari before reaching the stunning Gosaikunda Lake.

While this trek may not be as costly as other treks in Nepal, it promises to deliver the same level of experience and adventure that you are seeking.

Furthermore, if you are new to trekking in Nepal and don’t know how things work out or are unfamiliar with prices then booking Gosaikunda Trek for 5 days can give you the motivation to go for an even bigger trek in the future.

Cultural and Religious Immersion

The Gosaikunda Trek is a beautiful and challenging journey located in the Himalayan mountains of Nepal. But it’s not just about hiking and admiring the breathtaking views. For Hindus, this trek is also an important pilgrimage due to its religious and cultural significance. Knowing about these aspects can make your trek more meaningful and help you appreciate the local traditions.

Weather and Temperature During Gosaikunda Trek

As Gosaikunda stands at an elevation over 3800m the weather constantly changes from time to time. Furthermore, the temperature and weather of the place also change based on the season you visit.

In the winter season, there is frequent snowfall and heavy winds, and the temperature decreases below freezing point. Similarly, other seasons like summer are warm during summer but are extremely cold at night.

In the higher altitude the weather is normally cold so always keep warm clothes with you. Furthermore, there are chances of extreme dehydration due to cold weather and several hours of trek so always drink hot water and drinks and keep yourself hydrated.

During spring and autumn season the temperature of days is around 20 degrees whereas at night it decreases to seven to ten degrees. In the Winter season, the days are colder as it reaches five to two degrees whereas the night reaches way beyond the freezing point in – 7 to -15 degrees.

The weather and temperature in the monsoon season are mildly colder during rainy days and since it continuously rains the night temperature decreases as well.

Best Months To Visit Gosaikunda Trek

The best seasons or times to visit the Gosaikunda trek can be different according to different trekkers. However, the overall consensus is that Autumn and Spring seasons are the best for any trekking.

Among these two seasons, Autumn is recognized as the optimal season for Gosaikunda Trek. The months of September through November fall within the Autumn season. September, being the post-monsoon month, carries a chance of rain. As the day progresses around early October, the probability of rainfall decreases,

October is widely acknowledged as the prime month for the Gosaikunda Trek due to its mild temperature and favorable weather conditions for trekking. However, as October progresses, the temperature gradually drops, marking the onset of colder weather. By the beginning of November, the transition to the winter season begins, which is not ideal for trekking activities.

The second-best month for Gosaikunda Trekking is April. April lies during the peak Spring season when the climate is stable. There is no chance of rainfall and since it is a peak Spring season the trails are welcomed by blooming flowers.

Moreover, some trekkers even argue that April can be the best month for trekking, especially for those who love to see rhododendron, pine, and pear forests blooming along the way. However, in this month the routes, lodges, and hotels are overcrowded which decreases the fondness for some trekkers.

The least optimal month for Gosaikunda Trek is mainly during monsoon season. June, July, and August normally fall and suffer from mild to heavy rainfall continuously throughout the day. Sometimes in lower altitudes, the rain doesn’t stop for two to three days which makes the trails wet, slippery, and difficult to scale.

Gosaikunda Trek Difficulty

The Gosaikunda Trek is relatively less challenging compared to other treks in Nepal. While certain sections of the trek may feature steep and demanding terrain, they are not insurmountable. There are many sections where you have to ascend and descend.

Since the trek spans only five days, with only two to three days dedicated to actual trekking, it may not induce as much fatigue as longer treks. However, on the days designated for trekking, you will need to walk for six to seven hours continuously, covering a minimum distance of seven to eight kilometers each day. Therefore, it is essential to be physically fit to undertake this trek.

Altitude sickness is another factor that contributes to trek difficulty, occurring beyond an altitude of 2500m. With an anticipated altitude of 4380m, the likelihood of experiencing sickness is heightened. Rushing to higher altitudes is typically the cause of altitude sickness.

When the body fails to acclimate to changes in air pressure and oxygen levels, altitude sickness ensues. Gradual ascent and descent are the best methods for preventing sickness. Additionally, allocating a separate day for acclimatization aids in adjusting to the atmospheric conditions. You can also prevent altitude sickness by keeping your body hydrated.

Since the 5-day Gosiakunda trek is very short, the acclimatization day is not separated for this particular adventure. For optimal trekking experience and to prevent altitude sickness, it is advisable to ascend slowly and ensure adequate rest at night to acclimate to the weather and oxygen levels in the region.

Food and Accommodation During Gosaikunda Trek

There are some amazing lodges, teahouses, and hotels along the way of Gosaikunda Trek. As you begin your trek in Kathmandu you can get to choose from five-star hotels which are expensive to budgeted lodges. The accommodation services in other places like Dhunce and Cnandanbari may not be as high class as Kathmandu, but they still provide decent services.

As altitude increases and you venture into more remote areas, accommodation will typically be in teahouses. These teahouses feature small rooms with a couple of beds each, meaning you’ll likely share your room with other trekkers.

In town areas of the region, attached bathrooms are available, but in more remote areas, bathrooms and sinks are typically located outside of the lodge. Private bathrooms are not commonly found in these secluded areas.

Regarding foods in the Gosaikunda Trek, you will have plenty of menus to choose from. In Kathmandu, there are lots of options from local Nepali, and Newari to various Western delicacies and cuisines. However, in the less remote areas, you will have options of local Dal Bhat, Bread, Roti, Vegetable Curry, Noodles Soup, etc.

In some town areas, you can get limited Western eateries such as Momos or Dumplings, Pizzas, Burgers, Sizzlers, Macaroni, Spaghetti, etc. You will generally have a course meal for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

For Breakfast, you will have Roti, cornflakes, Cereals, Hot Drink, Biscuits, etc. Avoid coffee and alcohol during your trekking as it is the root cause of dehydration.
